С 1908 - партнер инвестиционной фирмы "Леман бразерс" [Lehman Bros.]. Во время первой мировой войны - капитан, затем полковник Генерального штаба. В 1929-32 - вице-губернатор, в 1933-42 - губернатор штата Нью-Йорк. В 1943-46 - генеральный директор Администрации помощи и восстановления Объединенных Наций (ЮНРРА) [United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA)]. истПолитическая партия левого направления. Была основана в 1936 профсоюзными лидерами, либерал-демократами и социалистами. Содействовала избранию Ф. Лагуардиа [ La Guardia, Fiorello Henry] на пост мэра г. Нью-Йорка в 1937 и 1941, а Г. Лемана [ Lehman, Herbert Henry] - на пост губернатора штата Нью-Йорк. Собрала значительное число голосов в поддержку Ф. Д. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] в 1936, 1940 и 1944. Во время второй мировой войны в партии произошел раскол на почве отношения к СССР. Правое крыло под руководством Д. Дубинского [ Dubinsky, David] обвинило левое крыло С. Хиллмана [ Hillman, Sidney] в том, что оно контролируется коммунистами. В избирательной кампании 1948 поддержала Г. Уоллеса [ Wallace, Henry Agard], что привело к снижению ее влияния.
